If Boise lays off 300 high paying Union workers over the next two months, there will be an immediate and long term impact on the local economy.

  1. Including the impact on local businesses, there could be an additional 100 jobs lost

  2. At their pay-scale, many of the laid off workers will go a long time out of work, will take lower paying jobs, and/or leave the community

  3. It could increase the home inventory on the market making it harder for everyone to sell and hold prices down

  4. The impact on the city and county tax base as well as incidental spending in local shops and restaurants... including Christmas... will be significant.

How will the layoffs affect you and your family?

"Shop Local". It really matters now on November 20, 2008 at 08:47 AM said:

We have heard the "Shop Local" mantra forever to the point of being numb to it's plea of support for local business and to the promise that if we all support local businesses they grow, create more jobs and our local economy improves.

Now, shopping local really matters. Between the national, state and local economic woes and the Boise layoffs, we as individuals are more important to the local business community than ever.

We should make an extra effort to patronize local businesses for our every-day purchases. Let's give local busineses a shot at our major purchases before we head to Beaverton or Portland. And great Christmas presents are for sale right here in our community.

Whether it is the spirit of being part of a community or the spirit of Christmas, every dollar matters.

While we all understand what it means to lose your job, the impact on our community is also important to watch. This is a time to shop local, to support your neighbor and local charities, count the blessings of the holidays. I wish everyone the best in getting through these times and let's each play our part in making 2009 a better year.
